Animal Control |
| |
Animal owners in the Fort Meade Military Community fall under the FGGM Animal Control Regulation 40-22 and local laws regarding animal restraint, abuse, sanitation, numbers, and other issues.
Maximum of two pets, dogs or cats, in any combination are authorized per household. Caged birds, caged hamsters and guinea pigs, and fish, may be kept if such pets do not present a threat to health or property. Owners living on-post are responsible for ensuring compliance with all Picerne Housing regulations concerning pets in on-post housing.
The following pets are prohibited in Housing: Pit Bulls (American Staffordshire Bull Terriers or English Staffordshire Bull Terriers), Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chows and wolf hybrids. Exotic animals such as, but not limited to, reptiles, rodents (other than hamsters and guinea pigs), ferrets, hedgehogs, skunks, rats, raccoons, squirrels, pot bellied pigs, monkeys, arachnids, or any farm animals are not allowed.
All pets on post must be kept under control at all times. Pets must be kept indoors or secured on the owner's premises. Pets may be secured with a tether or a chain no longer than 15 feet in length or may be kept in a fenced area within the owners promises. If animals are tethered or chained they must be limited to a boundary not less than four feet from common user rights-of-way (e.g. sidewalks, streets). They must not be secured to trees, shrubbery, or any government property.
Owners must provide proper shelter from the weather when housing animals outdoors. The shelter shall be a moisture-proof and windproof structure. The size must accommodate the entire body of the pet to allow it to stand up, turn around, and allow retention of body heat. The shelter must be made of durable material with a solid floor raised at least two inches from the ground. The entrance shall be covered by a flexible windproof material, self-closing swinging door, or wind baffle.
Animals kept outdoors must be provided shelter, fresh water, and food. All cases of suspect animal abuse or neglect will be investigated by the Fort Meade Police and the Installation Veterinarian. Owners keeping animals under inhumane conditions may be refused the right to keep animals on post and may be subject to UCMJ action under article 134. It is the owner's responsibility to locate escaped animals. Animal control will not search for your animal for you.

Children in the facility |
| |
We have a small waiting room that is often full of cats and dogs together--an environment in which children may be at high risk of being injured. Children are allowed in our facility at the discretion of the VTF staff; if the waiting room is full, or you unable to control your animal or your children, you may be asked to reschedule. Parents need to be aware that the VTF is also used to examine Military Working Dogs, and that they occasionally will be present in the waiting area. Parents must maintain control of their children at all times to ensure safety. |

PCSing Overseas |
| |
Contact the VTF as soon as you are notified that you are PCSing to find out what your pet needs prior to departure. *Be sure to ask about shipping and quarantine requirements; some countries have strict import requirements and may require more than six months preparation time to ensure that all requirements can be met and health certificates issued on time.*
Please call in advance to schedule appointments for required testing, vaccinations, microchipping and health certificates. Remember to pick up your pet's records when PCSing to your next duty station. If you no longer own the pet please notify the VTF so your record can be properly disposed of. |
